  electronic drinking water reports

Status: In Production

data exchange description

States have the primary responsibility for implementing and enforcing the drinking water standards promulgated under the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA). Most of the laboratory data the State Drinking Water Programs receive from either the state laboratories or private commercial laboratories come as paper documents that must be manually entered into the State’s information system.

The manual entry of information is labor intensive and inefficient, resulting in the delay of appropriate corrective actions. It also increases the occurrence of errors. The resources available in this data exchange can help states accomplish the following objectives:

  • Develop and implement a process of electronic data exchange directly from laboratories to the State Drinking Water Programs
  • Provide access to laboratory data to EPA, programs, and the general public via Network Nodes in XML format
  • Ensure that future environmental decisions are made from accurate and consistent laboratory data
  • Reduce the reporting burden on the regulated community

implementation resources

  • eDWR XML Schema (Version 2.2)
  • eDWR XML Schema Version Change Summary - A document detailing the minor updates that have been performed to the e-Drinking Water (eDWR) XML Schema Version 2.0 and 2.1 to create Version 2.2.
  • eDWR XML Schema Detailed Information - A document containing a list of XML tags, and their associated groupings and definitions, contained in the e-DWR Schema.
  • Data Converter Tool - This converter is a valuable tool for any State that wishes to implement an e-Reporting solution for laboratory analysis results and also uses SDWIS/State to manage their drinking water data.
  • Best Practices Document - A document describing best practices for States when developing and designing a process and information system to support the electronic submission of drinking water information.
  • Laboratory Survey Summary - A document summarizing the results of a Survey conducted by the CGP to determine laboratories use of technology.
