States have the primary responsibility for implementing and enforcing the drinking water standards promulgated under the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA). Most of the laboratory data the State Drinking Water Programs receive from either the state laboratories or private commercial laboratories come as paper documents that must be manually entered into the State’s information system.
The manual entry of information is labor intensive and inefficient, resulting in the delay of appropriate corrective actions. It also increases the occurrence of errors. The resources available in this data exchange can help states accomplish the following objectives:
Develop and implement a process of electronic data exchange directly from laboratories to the State Drinking Water Programs
Provide access to laboratory data to EPA, programs, and the general public via Network Nodes in XML format
Ensure that future environmental decisions are made from accurate and consistent laboratory data
Reduce the reporting burden on the regulated community
