Status: In Production
Note: On July 16, 2010, the AQS schema was upgraded to from version 2.1 to version 2.2. Version 2.2 is backward compatible with version 2.1 and version 2.0 and EPA will support submissions using all three versions. The only changes made to this schema are as follows:
- The Element CityCode has been made optional.
- The element UrbanAreaCode has been made optional.
- The type VersionType has been changed to an enumeration to avoid problems with the CDX parser
For a complete summary of the changes made to the schema, please see the Change Control Log below.
data exchange description
Network partners can use the Exchange Network to submit data to EPA's Air Quality System (AQS). AQS is a national database that contains ambient air quality monitoring data collected by State, Tribal and local governments. This information is used to determine compliance with clean air standards, assess the nature of air pollution problems in North America, and assess the exposure of humans to toxic and other dangerous airborne pollutants.
U.S. EPA is currently supporting three versions of the AQS exchange - v2.2, v2.1, and v2.0. Version 1.0 has been deprecated. Resources for the current versions are available below. The XML schemas were written to accomodate exchanges with EPA's AQS system as well as with other Network partners. This enables partners to share real-time air quality data with EPA and with each other. For more info on how states have reused the AQS exchange see the Air Quality Data Exchange or read MassDEP's success story on MassAir. The AQS schema is compliant with the Environmental Sampling and Results (ESAR) data standard.
Data Flow Implementation Guide – This guide provides a high-level overview of the data flow including advice about when to consider implementing the flow and a summary of planned improvements to the flow’s design and usability.
implementation resources
AQS Version 2.2
The AQS documentation package has been received and reviewed by the NTG Conformance Committee. The Committee has deemed the schema and supporting flow documentation acceptable for use on the Exchange Network. The most recent version of the AQS data exchange is version 2.2. The following links
are to implementation resources for this most recent version. See below for links to resources for previous versions.
For more information on the schema and documentation review, you can read the developer's Schema Conformance Report for version 2.1 since the changes for version 2.2 did not require a new Conformance Report. For additional information on the review process, please visit the section on Publishing a Data Exchange.
AQS Version 2.1
Version 2.1 of the AQS exchange is not the most recent but will continue to be supported by EPA. The AQS documentation package was received and reviewed by the NTG Conformance Committee. The Committee deemed the schema and supporting flow documentation acceptable for use on the Exchange Network.
For more information on the schema and documentation review, you can read the developer's Schema Conformance Report for version 2.1. For additional information on the review process, please visit the section on Publishing a Data Exchange.
AQS Version 2.0
Version 2.0 of the AQS exchange is not the most recent but will continue to be supported by EPA. The AQS documentation package was received and reviewed by the NTG Conformance Committee. The Committee deemed the schema and supporting flow documentation acceptable for use on the Exchange Network.
For more information on the schema and documentation review, you can read the developer's Schema Conformance Report and the accompanying NTG Conformance Review. For additional information on the review process, please visit the section on Publishing a Data Exchange.
AQS Version 1.0
Version 1.0 of the AQS exchange has been deprecated. U.S. EPA will continue to support 1.0 submissions from partners that have existing exchanges in place; however, new users should develop exchanges using the current resources listed above.
